Buddhist Offering Bowls
Buddhist monks and nuns have to accept everything people put into their begging bowls; is that bad stuff too?
I’m trying to develop more gratitude in myself, and one model of gratitude is the Buddhist monk with the begging bowl. Their approach is truly “beggars can’t be choosers.”, so they supposedely, they can’t turn down anything a person puts into the begging bowl. But I also believe in moral values, and by nature, moral values involve saying no to something.
So, for example, what if a person put drugs (like crystal meth), violent video games like Grand Theft Auto, Hitler’s book, or Howard Stern’s “Private Parts” book or a buy one get one free ticket to the local brothel, into their begging bowl. Would they be compelled to accept and fully use the stuff? Would they be ungrateful to the universe for rejecting such offerings? T
he bigger question is how is it possible to reject things while still be grateful to what the universe offers you?
Just because you accept something in your begging bowl does not mean you have to use it. It is not in the nature of Buddha’s teaching to say no to to charity. You cannot understand charity or even gratitude if you feel you can say no to something. You are not truly a beggar than. Remember there is always another beggar around the corner, and you always have the choice to feel the joy of charity to offer something to that other beggar. I am sure there is some beggar out there that would be grateful for that meth, or game. You never know what is in store for the things that enter your bowl, and what importance they have in your life and on your path. If you do not know what to do with the porn, be grateful for the opportunity to discover and understand what Buddha has planned for you with that gift. See, the point is, everything is a gift, and it is rude to reject it.
Remember, you can only give as much as you are willing to receive.
Mull on that for a bit.
