Don’t Just Read The Bible, Study It
Why should you study the Bible in the first place? You’ve seen the movie, right? In most sermons the pastor reads the verses aloud, so why should you read them yourself? If you’re waiting for Hollywood to show you the entire Bible in a nice DVD format that you can enjoy with some popcorn and a soda, then good luck with that. You may be waiting for a while. The same applies if you want to simply listen to whatever verses are being taught to you on Sunday morning. No matter how wonderful the sermon might be, it won’t make up for studying on your own afterward to gain a better understanding of the lesson being taught.
The Bible was written over a period of centuries by people much smarter and closer to God than I am. Some of it was written by people who actually knew and followed Jesus during his lifetime. I would much rather read the actual words of the Apostles rather than watch a movie and hear the interpretations of some screenwriter. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy watching a few religious movies, but I try to remember that this is just an interpretation. Very seldom do I find any movie to be as good as the book, particularly if I read the book first.
As you begin your study of the Bible, remember that it was inspired by God and is the word of God. If you’re reading a chapter and trying to hurry because you want to finish and do something else, then you’re doing it wrong. If you were suddenly told you had to deliver a baby and all you had was an instruction manual, I bet you’d pay close attention to what it said and not just skim through it assuming you understood enough to do the job. Can you do anything less with the Bible, a manual that was written to pass down the words of God?
Bible Study Tips
- Find a quiet place and time when you can study. If you have distractions like the television in the background, kids running in and out, etc. then you won’t be able to focus. If necessary, get up a few minutes earlier or reserve some time in the evening before bed to read.
- Prepare your space beforehand by having a notebook, pencil, and highlighter right next to your Bible.
- Mentally prepare yourself by sitting quietly, breathing evenly, and simply getting into the moment. In other words, relax.
- Pray. Ask for guidance and wisdom from the Holy Spirit as you study.
- Choose the verses you will read, don’t just open the Bible and start randomly. If you’re just getting started then you may want to start with the Gospels. They are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament.
- Read for only 10 to 15 minutes. Don’t try to force yourself to read a certain number of chapters or verses. The main objective here is to learn, not cram for pop quiz.
- As you read, keep an open mind. The Holy Spirit speaks to us while reading God’s word, so you should be listening for it. Does the passage you’re reading remind you of something or someone in your life? If so, maybe God wants to speak to you about that.
- Highlight passages that speak to you. As you come back later, they will stand out and draw your attention to them.
- Take notes in a journal/diary. Just put your thoughts down on paper. Maybe it’s a word or phrase you need to look up later. Maybe you have a question you want to ask of your pastor/priest. Whatever comes to you, write it down.
