Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini in Sanskrit literally means ‘uncoiled’. In yoga, a corporeal, instinctive or libidinal force or energy (prana) is believed to be lying dormant as a sleeping serpent coiled at the base of the spine. A set of advanced yoga exercises (kriyas) under the Kundalini yoga discipline, proposes to liberate, awaken or uncoil our latent creative energy. Rigorous practice of pranayama (breath control), physical exercises, meditation, and chanting will release the coiled force and draw it up through the body awakening each of the seven vital points (chakras) in a body. Complete illumination occurs when this energy reaches the Crown Chakra. Complete illumination means stirring of inner knowledge, starting of a deeper awareness of our creative abilities and our hidden potential. We become conscious of our own finite existence and its relationship to infinite truths of the universe. A psycho-spiritual growth takes place and the body too attains maturation.
Every person of every age group has an essential right to be happy and lead a harmonious life. Whether you are a householder raising your family, or have a stressful job or run a business, Kundalini yoga is for all; it simply helps you meet the challenges presented by daily life. Its practice harmonizes the glandular system, strengthens the nervous system, purifies the bloodstream, expands the capacity of the lungs and creates equilibrium between the mind, body and soul. In this way you become your own masters instead of being dictated by your feelings and thoughts. You will develop a better comprehension of the consequence of your actions and have the choice and the wisdom to act. Success and brilliance will be attained willfully by you.
A systematic routine of exercise, based on warm-up and then working from the base of the spine to the top, stimulates all twenty-six vertebrae and regulates the circulation of the spinal fluid resulting in a sharp and alert mind. A scheduled practice of this set of exercises will enhance vitality, prevent back aches, decrease stress and maintain youthfulness by improving spine suppleness. New levels of joy, knowledge and love in their purest form will be reached.
Kundalini is a spiritual type of yoga. It is more than the mere physical performance of poses. Contemplation accompanied by controlled breathing and the sound of the mantra ‘Sat Nam’ (truth is my identity) act as the key resources of Kundalini yoga. A practicing school believes in using ‘Breath of Fire’, in which constant, rapid exhalation and inhalation through the nose pumps up the naval point while the abdomen is used as a bellows. An elevated consciousness is achieved with this activity as the rhythm of breathing along with the chant of ‘Sat Nam’ prevents the mind from chattering idly. This rigorous and physically intense yogic activity consists of quick, successive breathing movements or of holding a pose while breathing in a particular way that is why the routine is appreciated only by those who are ready to accept challenges of the body and the mind.
