Integrated Amrita Meditation?
I have been reading about Integrated Amrita Meditation and it seems like a form of meditation that may better fit my lifestyle. It was created by the Guru Amma. However I haven’t been able to find anywhere that will show me instruction on it. I did see that you could learn it for free from one of her followers however it seems more like something you would do with a business retreat or something. I just wanted to learn it on my own. Does anybody know where classes are held (I live in the Philadelphia/Reading area of Pennsylvania) or if there is some instructional video I could get. I have searched on youtube, amazon, and her website. Any serious help will be appreciated!
Please see the Wikipedia entry on Raja Yoga. Integrated Amrita Meditation is a trademarked combination of yoga, pranayama, and meditation. True yoga already includes pranayama and meditation. However, as practiced in the west(Hatha yoga), we put a much greater emphasis on the physical postures(asanas) of yoga.
At some point in history yoga started to mean Hatha yoga and the name “Raja Yoga” was coined to refer to the original yoga which had more of an emphasis on pranayama, meditation and other aspects. Hatha yoga was invented to prepare a person for Raja yoga.
Integrated Amrita Meditation is taught in India; but luckily any good yoga instructor can teach you a more wholesome practice that includes focused pranayama and meditation. Yoga teachers know about these things; it’s just that these things aren’t as popular in the west. Teachers are compelled to teach what looks exciting in class and on DVDs.
If you practice Hatha yoga (or any other kind that I can recall), you’ll notice that emphasis is always placed on how you breath. That awareness of breath is the practice of pranayama.
At the end of a yoga session, there’s always that final relaxation period. This is the time when one should engage in seated meditation(for at least 5 min.). But remember, the whole practice is meditation. The state of mind, while doing the physical practice, is very important, as important as focus on the breath.
So see the Wikipedia article on Raja Yoga(source below), then explore all the free videos you can find on yoga, pranayama, and meditation.
I don’t want to suggest anything in particular because I do mostly Hatha yoga myself. A long time ago, I practiced Zen meditation daily; but now it’s just the short meditation at the end of Hatha yoga practice.
