Meditation At Work
When was the last time you woke up fresh, alive, vibrant and tingling with excitement at the prospect of spending another day at work? You spend a large percentage of your time at work and if your work/home life is anything like most of the working world, your world will be dominated by your work.

By chance, the other day I read an article in a Jehovah’s Witness newsletter which stated that more than 2 out of every 3 Canadians find it difficult to balance family life and work; among European workers, 6 out of 10 suffer from work stress; and among U.S. employees, 1 in 3 feels chronically overworked.
To avoid becoming another statistic it is essential you find a way to bring balance and stability into your life otherwise your health, personal relationships and sense of belonging diminishes and you feel poorly, unhappy and worry about everything.
Meditation offers you a set of tools and practical strategies to help you bring more balance and harmony into your life.

Three Ways Meditation Can Help You to Reduces Stress in the Workplace
1. Meditation techniques deepen your experience of relaxation and rest. During meditation your body undergoes certain physiological effects which counteract the negative effects of stress – your brain activity slows down as there is an increase in alpha brain wave activity; your heartbeat and breathing rate slow down and blood lactate levels drop. On a practical level this means you have more energy to do the things you have to without feeling overwhelmed and stressed. A bonus during intense days at work.
2. Meditation encourages and strengthens your mind to focus your thoughts on uplifting, positive images or sounds. When you sit in meditation, your mind struggles to remain still and all kinds of thoughts – angry thoughts, unhappy thoughts, desirable thoughts, drift in and out of your consciousness. The more you are able to sit with “your thoughts and bring your attention to your point of concentration” the easier it is for you to work and complete work assignments whilst under pressure.
3. There are various meditation techniques you can use to help you cope better with work place stress – these include mantra meditation, breath awareness, visualisations and affirmations. All of these techniques can be quietly practiced at your work station without disturbing your colleagues or interrupting your schedule. In fact, practicing any of these techniques, even for 5 minutes leaves you feeling calmer, clearer and more able to focus on your work.
Workplace stress can affect your health, personal relationships and can lead to insomnia and emotional instability as you feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work. Meditation techniques offer you a way to stop you feeling stressed out and exhausted and help you regain your work/home balance.
