Meditation Chair Back
I am asking this question to all those who practice “meditation” & also those who are spiritually inclined.
I have some problem doing meditation in the seated posture on the ground…padmasana or ardha padmasana because it hurts my lower back somewhat & also I have slight pain in the right upper thigh. So can I do meditation sitting on a chair …I have been shown a posture how to do it. ?? As long as I keep my back straight & I am being able to concentrate I hope its OK. What (object or whatever) do u people concentrate on while doing meditation & also do u keep ur eyes open or slightly closed ? I am asking the slightly advanced people in meditation.
Thanks
If you really want to meditate in a cross-legged posture, sit on a low cushion. It will help align the back. Otherwise, be comfortable. I used to meditate (for years and years) in half-lotus or some variation (common posture in eastern meditation practices). Now, I sit on a stool (common posture in western meditation practices), and it’s much more comfortable. Shavasana posture is a little tricky, because I often fall asleep in it. The point is to keep the back straight, including the cervical spine (where the neck meets the head). The chin in slightly tucked to accomplish this. Eye posture (open, closed, half-closed) depends on the type of meditation that you are doing.
I used to do mantrayana (recitation of a mantra), tattva shuddhi (meditation on the chakras), silent meditation (observing and distancing oneself from thoughts), or Tantric type meditation in which spontaneous movement arises during silent meditation. I now do silent/Tantric type meditation, a western hermetic adaptation of tattva shuddhi, and an esoteric western visualization-type meditation (in which one visualizes a landscape or scenario and “travels” through it to have an insightful inner experience).
In order to really assist you in what you are trying to accomplish in meditation, I would need to know what type of meditation you are doing now and why and whether or not you received that technique through a teacher.
