Can anyone give me a brief overview of the Ottoman Empire?
Not a wikipedia article, just like a paragragh or two. Real brief from Osman I to the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
the ottoman empire emerged from the ruins of the Seljuk state through the rule of Osman I.At the height of its power in the 16th and 17th centuries, the tri-continental Ottoman Empire controlled much of Southeastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, stretching from the Strait of Gibraltar (and in 1553 the Atlantic coast of North Africa beyond Gibraltar) in the west to the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf in the east, from the edge of Austria and Slovakia and the hinterland beyond Ukraine in the north to Sudan and Yemen in the south.
Notable in their conquests and expansionism were sultans like Mehmed II who ended the Byzantine empire , Suleiman the Magnificient under who the empire reached its greatest naval status and who had to be halted at the gates of Vienna. the fall of the ottoman empire could be attributed to stagnation and administrative instability due to breakdown of the central government. by the end of the first world war the end for the empire was apparent.the last sultan who ruled and was also the 100th caliph of Islam was Mehmed VI or Mehmed Vahdettin .
