Hypnosis (both guided by someone else or self-hypnosis) has been used throughout the centuries as a way of managing pain. It is often intertwined with religious practice. Monks in many different cultures are able to endure what most of us would consider to be quite painful rituals without experiencing great discomfort because their minds are so focused on the spiritual element(s). Though meditation, they are able to achieve a level of self-hypnosis in which their brain is able to ignore or “switch off” the pain receptors.
Pain occurs not at the site of the injury, but rather in the mind. It is the nerves which signal to receptors in the brain that pain should be felt, and it is the brain that then triggers that sensation. But monks aren’t the only ones to use hypnosis to control unpleasant sensations. Before anesthesia was available, people often used hypnosis (again, either self- or guided-) as a means of managing pain and discomfort during surgery.
Today, hypnosis is an excellent tool for managing pain due to chronic conditions such as: fibromyalgia, arthritis, migraine headaches and menstrual cramps. It can also be used to ease the side effects from chemotherapy. Furthermore, it is a growing trend for women to use hypnotherapy in order to give birth at home in a natural, drug-free environment. The benefit of this kind of hypnosis is that once you are familiar enough with the practice to engage in self-hypnosis, it can be used to ease all types of pain and physical discomfort.
