What’s the best video camera with excellent sound quality?
I’m looking to buy a video camera, possibly and HD one (price is not too important, but obviously the cheaper the better). The most important thing to me is not video quality, but sound quality. I will be taking a trip to the rainforest soon and want a camera that can capture all the sounds cleanly without wind or other distortion.
all record the audio digitally. on miniDV there is an option for 16 bit or 12 bit audio. I have a camera that defaults to the 12 bit mode, so i have to check it regularly to be sure it is in 16. 12 bit mode is the same as the old Sony mini disc audio recorders with Atrak compression. 16 bit is uncompressed and superior for critical recording. The camera has auto gain for the audio, but that should not be noticable for your purposes where the gain will be full up all the time. Getting an external microphone that can be removed from the camera by 2-3 feet will help reduce the pickup of motor noise. A shotgun style helps isolate the distant sounds but they will pick up handling noise, so it works best if attached to a support.
