Transcendental Meditation Center
Is there any proof that meditation has a positive effect on individuals and society?
I live in Fairfield, Iowa… the American center for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s transcendental meditation movement. I am surrounded by friends and co-workers who make spectacular claims about the positive effects of meditation both on the individual and the effects on society as a whole.
On the individual they will claim that inner peace will be found and eventually if someone meditates long enough they can develop “super natural” abilities.
In the relm of society they will tell me for example, that a group of 4000 TMers in Washington DC meditating for hours helped reduce the crime rate and improve the gernal mood of the population.
They further tell me there is a myriad of studies to prove the validity of their claims, but I am unable to find anything outside of articles put out by the local “Maharishi University of Managment”.
I was hoping somone could give some insight on how to logically combat these claims or point me to some good reading on the subject.
Generally speaking: meditation can help people deal with chronic/acute pain, addiction and stress. Some feel it brings them closer to whatever divine they worship.
Perhaps a google search on meditation and its benefits would help?
